Welcome to Bogota, Colombia. A passport stamp, retrieve of my luggage, I hailed a cab, and I was off. I had arrived in Bogota to see this capital city had for me. Once I’d checked into my hotel as always, I walked around with no direction in mind. The hotel was a main street and as I’d find out Bogota is not the quietest city. It was just after six and sun was slowly setting as light gave way to dark. Bogota is not the cleanest or quietest city and there is a fair amount of homeless. But I would come to meet some of the nicest in all my travels.
Once I’d finished dinner, which was Domino’s pizza, I didn’t feel like looking for a place to eat, I met my friend Juan, and we started a night of drinking always drinking the local beer. The bar had a few patrons but nothing too crazy. At one point I said to Juan I’d love to hear some Tina Turner right now and he said, ‘I’ll be right back.’ And the next thing I knew’ I was watching Ike and Tina performing ‘River Deep Mountain High’ on The Ed Sullivan Show – it is something that is a clear today as the night it happened.
I stayed in a part of the city called ‘Recoleta’ and we were surrounded by nightclubs and bars. A few clubs were open, but I’d been a plane all day and the bars were enough for me. And after one more we said our goodbye’s, I was tired and the alcohol was only making it worse, I needed a bed. Tomorrow it would be time to see all Bogota.
