As I emerged from the airport there they stood as they did seven years ago a fleet of red taxis. Any one of which ready to take me to my hotel, it was December and I had arrived in San Jose. I promised myself I would not be in sub-zero Boston when the clock struck midnight December 31 and I was keeping that promise. Costa Rica was the first country I’d visit when I started my trip around the world in 2005 and it’ll always be a special place. I was excited to see how much it had changed.
Well one thing that hadn’t changed was the traffic minutes after leaving the airport we were in a jam and as always I had the cab driver that drove as if he were the only car on the street but I made it safely to my hotel. Once I’d checked in and unpacked I started walking, making my way to the city center. As I walked along the streets it all slowly stated coming back, the great time I had here seven years ago. Streets lined with stores with people standing outside vying your business and in between just about any fast food your heart desired and in the center of it all people trying to sell you every fake designer piece you could imagine.

With each new street I turned onto the memories just kept flowing and then I finally reached the city center ‘Parque Central’ (Central Park for my English speaking readers). This was the city’s heartbeat, where everything began. The perfect place start your day, end your day or sit and do absolutely nothing. With the entire city surrounding you any direction you took you would see all this city had to offer and with a strong police presence safety is never a concern, Costa Rica is one of Latin America’s safest cities. And if you don’t feel like walking, which is the only way to see this great city, there is a line of red cabs to take you wherever your heart desires.
